adam carter asked:

Silk satin is one of the most sought after fabrics due to its beguiling qualities. The softness is the best one that gives a feel as if pouring water on skin. It gives a very special feel on wearing as of a luxurious princess.

Satin has a special glow and when mixed with silk becomes softer. Silk and satin together makes a wonderful combination. Silk Satin is the most beloved fabric of all and is highly appreciated by all for its fantastic qualities. Silk Satin, hub of myriad qualities is used in the making of many things, but especially dresses. Their feel and sensation is just like skin and is very comfortable too. Other things where it is highly used are in bed sheets, pillow covers, shoes, covers and so on. Once you get a taste of silk satin you will want it in everything. There is no other fabric than silk satin that can give nice feel like it. Along with smoothness it also provides a cooling effect.

Satin is made out of many other fabrics also like synthetic, cotton, chiffon etc but no other combination is as chic as silk satin. The main thing that makes this combination an ace is that silk is a natural material. Every natural thing breathes and so silk, which also ascertains that your skin is also breathing. Silk provides way to the skin to let air passes through it. This is not the case with other fabrics, though how much soft or glossy they are. They will never give you the same feel as silk gives. Even satin is also soft but it also alone cannot provide this. Hence when silk is combined with satin imparts its qualities to it also. So silk satin ensure cool and fresh feel throughout the day, therefore so much in demand.

Silk satin plays a great role in the making of various types of dresses. Every occasion dress can be made out of it. Like wedding dresses, bridal gowns, evening gowns, ball gowns, party dresses, designer dresses, hot dresses, beaded dresses, two-piece dresses, cocktail dresses, plus size dresses etc. It nicely falls over each curve of the body and gives a beautiful impression with its shine. Whether want to wear sophisticated look for the wedding or classic look for evening, the silk satin dress is substantial choice for all.

As silk is natural fabric, likewise there is natural reason behind giving its shine. Silk fabric containing silk moth has numerous extended hairs like fibers having threadlike cells, which reflects great shine. These fibers are triangular in shape like prisms that reflect the light from many different angles. This is the reason why silk has a natural glow to it that you cannot find anywhere else.

These all are the reasons why silk satin is so much in hype. People are crazy after it, due to its great charm and attractive qualities. Whenever you want to look special or want to feel grand go for silk satin dresses, as with giving glow, it also possesses feminine appeal.

When buying dress shirts, many men only focus on how the neck and sleeves fit, but that doesn’t guarantee the best look. Although a dress shirt may look fine underneath a suit jacket, a fitted dress shirt is still the best option. Not only will it fit well beneath a slim cut suit, but it will also look great without a jacket. Many times, men will take off their suit jacket, revealing their baggy and sloppy dress shirts. Often times a bad fit will lead to excess fabric and a loose-fitting shirt around the arms, sides and backs giving off a parachute look. There are, however, many shirt enthusiasts and shirt makers who care about the fit of shirt as much as the design but unfortunately even if men are aware of this problem there is a general lack of fitted dress shirts in stores.

In general, there are 3 types of men’s fitted dress shirts:

Slim Fitted Dress Shirt – Sizes of slim fitted dress shirts vary quite dramatically, but usually they are for the smaller body frame. Normal Fitted Dress Shirt - If you are looking for the more relaxed dress shirt choose a normal fit. It works well on all occasions and you will be feeling very little restraints in movement from the shirt. Loose Fitted Dress Shirt - This type of fit is for the fully relaxed fit, usually suited for the heavier man. It gives full free movement and more air.

Although most stores offer these different fit types, sizes vary from store to store making it a hassle to finding the perfect fitting dress shirt. Not only do the shirt sizes vary, but the shirts aren’t made to your specific body so rarely do men find fitted dress shirts that fit them properly. There is a solution, however, to this rather prevalent problem among men and it is the fitted dress shirt. The recommended method of choice would be to get a fully customizable dress shirt, also known as tailored, bespoke, or made to measure dress shirts. This kind of made to measure fit usually involves around 9 measurements of your upper body, but varies from tailor to tailor. Getting a custom fitted dress shirt will result in the most ideal fit and the best look.

A fitted dress shirt will fit the torso as well as the neck and the sleeves will also have a bit slimmer cut. Overall, the shirt will contain less excess fabric and thus eliminating that awful baggy look. Not only will a fitted shirt fit great under a suit jacket with less fabric but it’ll also look great without a suit jacket. With a custom made fitted dress shirt you’ll have the options of exactly how fitted you want the shirt to be, having complete control over the final look of the shirt. All in all, the fully custom fit shirt is your best choice when looking for something that will fit. These shirts are the only ones made entirely for you.

So you’re finally going to be a bridesmaid but the wedding happens to be in another city that you need to fly to. You start to panic. You worry about how to pack your bridesmaid dress, how you might be the only bridesmaid with a bridesmaid dress looking wrinkled or with a visible crease, or worry about the airline sending your luggage to another city with your bridesmaid dress in it.

Traveling with a bridesmaid dress is not going to be a problem at all and here are a few tips that will help ensure that your bridesmaid dress makes it to the wedding looking elegant and new.

Ask the Bridal Shop About the Dress Material

The bridal shop would normally be able to give you suggestions on how to take the bridesmaid dress on your flight, and even how to get rid of wrinkles. Ask them for some suggestions.  You may need to take with you a fabric steamer, wrinkle reducer spray or a flat iron; depending on the kind of fabric used on the dress and the bridal shop’s recommendations.

Call the Airline

Different airlines have different policies on what you can or cannot take on the plane with you. While most airlines do allow you carry a dress in a garment bag, it would be best to call the airline and inquire about their policies on carrying on. In most cases, the flight attendant would take your bridesmaid dress and hang it in one of their closets or lay it flat in an unoccupied overhead bin.

One of a bride’s wedding nightmares is to learn that her bridesmaid’s dress got misplaced by the airline, so it is always best to carry it with you on the plane. You cannot afford to let it out of your sight.

Proper Packing

While some people swear that rolling a bridesmaid dress can minimize creases or wrinkles, I found that the best way would be to put it in a garment bag with a plastic bag over it. You can also use a cheap plastic garment bag and if you really want to save, you can use a garbage bag with a hole poked through the bottom with a hanger. The bag would then hang to cover the dress and you can tie the bottom end and wrap the knot around the hanger neck. As a precaution, only use plastic hangers so you don’t cause alarms when passing through X-Rays or metal detectors.

You can also check with the bridal shop if you can have them package it like they do other dresses that they have shipped. They would then put it in a large box that you can carry with you and stow in the overhead bin.

Steaming to Remove Wrinkles

So you made it, you checked your dress and found some wrinkles. What now? A quick fix would be to hang it in your bathroom and run the shower on just hot water for 15 minutes. Doors and windows must be closed and exhaust fan shut off. You can smooth out the wrinkles on the fabric with your hands, then let it hang to dry completely.

Don’t use wrinkle spray or water on satin and light colored fabric as this may leave a mark or spot. Sprays work best on cotton and when you do, spray sparingly and lightly. Do this if you have ample time to air dry.

Do not iron a dress unless your bridal shop says its fine to do so, and even then be careful, the heat may cause discoloration of the fabric. You can steam and dry out wrinkles by hanging the dress up, holding a heated iron about 6 inches away then releasing a burst of steam on the area while pulling on the hem to stretch out the wrinkle.

Finally if you have plenty of time and don’t mind spending, why not have it shipped to the Bride ahead of time or to someone who can have it pressed and ready by the time you arrive.

Faye asked:

This fall a new bridal company made its debut – Alleanza Bridal – an on-line boutique that specializes in modest wedding gowns made from exquisite fabrics. The company is a mother/daughter team that wanted to bring a more upscale couture quality dress and more modern styles to the present selection of modest wedding gowns. They wanted to give brides that were looking for a more modest look or LDS temple ready gown more options. “When we shopped for bridal gowns for my three daughters, the styles seemed to be so similar, very cookie-cutter.” co-owner Faye Hunt explains, “We were told that – if you want modest – that is all the selection there is. It was so frustrating – we knew that there could be so much more – more variety of fabrics, more unique styles, and more individual details. We felt brides deserved to have a lot more choices for the most important dress they will ever buy – something that suited their individual style and personality, a gown that would set her apart.”

So Faye partnered with her daughter, a recent bride herself, and began to search for beautiful fabrics and designed options they wished they had had. The result is their new line of six quite unique and different gowns. The fabrics are quite stunning – alencon and chantilly laces from France, stamped organza from Italy, and luxurious satins. In fact, their name “Alleanza” (meaning ‘to covenant’ in Italian) is a nod to the European fabrics that inspired their collection. Each of their creations is individually custom crafted in the United States with impeccable workmanship. The result is gowns that are breathtakingly beautiful with a sophisticated style. “Modest doesn’t have to mean plain or boring” co-owner Michele Cloward explains. “When I got engaged I wanted a dress that was a little more unique. There seemed to be cheap modest dresses and then a big jump to very expensive designer gowns. I was looking for something somewhere in the middle and it just wasn’t there. I love lace, but we weren’t finding many options in the modest gowns. The dresses that were crafted out of beautiful laces required extensive altering to make them appropriate for my temple wedding. That is sort of scary to take an expensive gown and make a lot of changes to it, and not really be sure what it will look like in the end. I wanted my dress to look like it was made just for me – and to flow smoothly – not be a gown that was “added to” or “pieced in.” We wanted our brides to be able to have a dress out of exquisite fabric that was made with their needs in mind from the very beginning.”

Faye and Michele said they chose to splurge on the most beautiful and exquisite fabrics they could find and then try to keep their gowns still affordable for the middle class girl by offering them on an on-line boutique where they could keep their costs down and pass the savings on to their brides. “Obviously, there are a lot of expenses involved in a wedding. Having had three daughters marry in the last 5 years I know,” Faye explains. “But when it is all over, the only thing that still remains is the dress and all the photos of the bride in her dress. The wedding dress sets the stage for the whole day. I never wanted my daughters to just “settle” for a dress – it’s their one big day and there are no do-overs – this is it. I wanted them to feel absolutely beautiful and also feel like the dress was suited to their own fashion style. I’ve never regretted the investment.”

Alleanza Bridal brings new options for the bride-to-be. Another aspect that Alleanza has in its favor is their quick turn around – since the gowns are individually made in the US, they can accommodate the bride without a lot of time, creating your gown in a month versus the 5-6 month lead time most bridal stores recommend. There are many factors to consider when shopping for that all important once-in-a-lifetime purchase of your wedding gown. Alleanza Bridal may have what you have been looking for.

Joanna Steele-Perkins asked:

What is it about the THE LITTLE BLACK DRESS that makes it so iconic?  It seems that according to market research every woman needs one and most women have one.  I for one don’t!  Black doesn’t suit me, not that this has stopped many other women.  A small part of me would love a little black cocktail dress and I have thought long and hard about why that is.  Even if you decide that you must have a black dress, there are so many variations on that theme.

Traditionally black is “slimming”.  This is questionable.  Trinny and Suzannah did an experiment of sorts with boxes on the television recently and generally black was considered a “heavier” colour.  All darker colours can be “slimming”, not necessarily black and using different colours together can have a greater effect.

There is something glamorous and sexy about a black dress.  Perhaps it seems mysterious or superior.  Certainly women who suit black do look incredibly chic dressed in a black dress.

Black is considered smart.  Yes, this is true but there are many other less harsh colours that are also very smart.  Charcoal grey or Pewter are examples.

Black is available.  This to me is the single most important factor.  During the winter months, particularly running up to Christmas, the shops are full of black dresses.  No wonder we are all tempted into them.

But look around and you will find some other beautiful, jewel like colours to wear to all those Christmas parties.  Purple, Jade, Scarlet.  They are all out there and just think how you will stand out from the crowd.

If however, I cannot persuade you to change your mind, please consider the following tips to look your very best in black.

If you have pale hair, skin and eyes, black will swamp you but by keeping it away from your face and choose a chiffon or lace fabric teamed with jewellery in a lighter colour, you can look fabulous.  You may need to apply a little more make-up than usual, again using an eye pencil in a flattering colour.

If you have dark hair and eyes then the world is your oyster as far as black goes.  Go on, you are in the minority who look great in black from head to foot.

If you have red or auburn hair, black will be very harsh on your skin.  Try to wear a lower cut dress and team it with a warm coloured scarf or jewellery.  Terracotta or salmon pink could look great.  Again, think about the fabric.  Soft or textured fabrics will absorb the light and be more flattering.

If you have grey or ash blonde hair, you can wear black more comfortably than many other women, but it is better to keep it away from your face.  If the neckline is too high it can make your chin shadowy.  Team your black dress with a lavender bolero or corsage and jewellery.

So it would seem that to a certain degree, we can all get away with wearing that Little Black Dress.  Just remember to use the style, fabric and colourful accessories to “customise” your black dress and make it perfect for you.

Wedding Solutions’ Guide to Choosing the Perfect Wedding Dress Style

By Alex & Elizabeth Lluch

www.weddingsolutions.com

www.wspublishinggroup.com

The style of your dress is the single most important factor in creating your overall look on your wedding day. Wedding dresses can range from sleek and simple to grand and elaborate, depending on your personal taste and the statement you want to make on your big day. The silhouette of your wedding dress is the first image that your groom will see when you begin your walk down the aisle, and you want to make sure that your first impression is a memorable one. Remember that your dress is not only something special to you, but it is also something special for your groom, and you want to look your best for the both of you.

This article focuses on the five basic wedding dress styles: A-line/Princess, Empire, Mermaid/Fishtail, Ball Gown, and Column. The purpose of outlining each of these silhouettes is to provide you with the necessary information you need to find the dress that is best suited for you. Each of these sections details the different necklines, sleeve lengths, dress lengths, and fabric choices that are best suited for each style. By walking into a bridal store with a clear idea of what you want, you will be saving yourself (and the salon clerk) a lot of headache. However, there is not a golden rule in wedding dress designs, and you owe it to yourself, and your future husband, to be adventurous when tying on gowns. You will never know what you look like in certain styles if you never try them on. Who knows, the style that you may think would look the worst on your body type might just be the one you end up choosing.

Dress Styles: A-Line/Princess

The A-line dress features a shape that is fitted around the bodice and flows out to the ground, resembling the outline of an uppercase A. The dress flows fluidly from the bust to the hem with an unbroken line. Due to its classic and simple style, the A-line dress is appropriate for any occasion, from a quiet backyard gathering, to a traditional church ceremony.

Options: The A-line is a versatile shape since it can accommodate many different structural elements, including horizontal seems that help define your waistline, or a separate bodice and skirt that feature contrasting fabrics. The look of the A-line dress is also dependant upon length, which can range from above the knee for a fun and flirty bride, to a full-length dress that flows into a chapel-length train for the more traditional bride.

The princess cut is the most dramatic variation of the A-line dress. This style emphasizes the clean lines of the A-line by utilizing vertical panels that run from the neckline to the hem. The princess style provides elongating lines that create a slimming effect since your eye focuses on the length created by these long, smooth seems.

The A-line style can support many different fabric choices, depending on the look you want. If you desire a simple look, free flowing silks like charmeuse are the best option because they allow the dress to hang naturally and create a soft feminine silhouette. If you want a more structured appearance that emphasizes the continuity of the A-line style, you will want a heavier fabric that can maintain shape, such as peau de soie silk or satin. This same effect can also be achieved with the use of organza, or other supporting fabrics, that can be layered to create a full skirt.

You can also affect the look of the A-line dress depending upon the added embellishments you choose. Lace overlays or bead work can make a simple A-line dress appear more formal, while a touch of color provided by a ribbon or bow can make a stylish statement.

Things to Consider: The A-line dress is flattering on almost all body types. The long lines of the princess cut dress can create the illusion of height on a shorter body, as well as slim down a rounded figure. The full skirt of the A-line can also hide a larger lower body, or create the illusion of curves on a narrow frame. Since the A-line dress is so versatile, simple modifications to the neckline, waistline, or fabric can accentuate your best features and hide those your not so fond of.

Dress Styles: Empire

An empire dress is defined by the raised waistline that sits just below the bust, from which the rest of the dress flows down to the hem. This style is usually paired with a square neckline and wide set straps or sleeves. Like the A-line, the empire style is very versatile and can accommodate a wide range of formality.

Options: Since the empire dress is primarily defined by the placement of the waistline, there are many other design options that contribute to the overall look of the dress. Sleeve length on an empire dress can range from long, bell sleeves for a winter Renaissance wedding, to a sleek, sleeveless design perfect for an outdoor summer affair. Skirt style is another important variable on the empire cut, as it can flow freely or contour to your body, depending on the silhouette you want to create.

Lighter fabrics work best on the empire design because they allow for the most movement and flow from the waistline. Layering silk chiffon over a base fabric will create a romantic effect, especially if the layers are tiered or arranged in a petal style that gently overlaps in the front. Lace is another great choice for this style that can add texture and detail to an otherwise simple design. The empire dress is also perfect for contrasting two fabrics, such as pairing a detailed brocade bodice with a simple satin skirt.

Things to Consider: While the empire dress fits well on most body types, it is especially suited for those brides with a smaller bust since it draws attention to the neckline and creates definition. Added accents and fabric embellishments, such as capped sleeves or delicate bead work, will help to draw attention to your chest and neckline, and therefore create the illusion of a fuller bust.

Oddly enough, this cut can also work to conceal a large bust by controlling and minimizing the size of your breasts due to the traditionally square neckline of the empire dress. Unlike other necklines that accentuate breast definition, such as the scoop neck or v-neck, the Empire’s square cut modestly covers larger breasts.

The design of the empire dress is also ideal for covering other unwanted body features such as a long torso, short legs, or a pear shaped figure. Since the dress flows from the bust line, it can easily leave these areas undefined. The structure of the empire dress is also ideal for pregnant brides since the fluidity of the dress can accommodate a growing belly.

Dress Styles: Column

The column dress has a narrow shape that flows straight down from the neckline to the hem. This dress, also referred to as a sheath, tends to hug the body and show any and all of your curves The column is appropriate for all types of weddings, especially causal occasions on the beach, or intimate evening events at a banquet hall.

Options: Due to the simplicity of the column style, there are many ways to change the overall appearance of the dress. Mixing various necklines and sleeve lengths will create a range of different looks around the basic cut of the column dress. A strapless column dress will look sexy and elegant, while one with a bateau neck and long, bell sleeves will look more romantic and whimsical.

The column silhouette works well with many different skirt lengths. The classic look barely grazes the floor, but you can mix it up with a knee length skirt for a casual afternoon wedding, or add a bustle and train for winter church wedding. Because of the simplicity of this style, the length of your dress can add character and formality to your gown.

The other major factor in the construction of the column dress is the fabric. Simply changing the material choice for this style can take the same dress from a slinky slip dress to highly constructed dramatic statement. If you prefer a slip dress, you should look for fabrics that can flow easily over the contours of your body, like light silks and satin. Heavier fabrics that can maintain shape, like damask or peau de soie silk, will give the dress a defined contour that will withstand movement.

Things to Consider: Similar to the mermaid style, the column dress is best worn by lean figures, both short and tall. The elongating nature of this design will help petite brides appear taller. However, the column dress does not allow much room for hiding problem areas, such as a larger lower body. It can conceal minor flaws if you opt for a constructed column that will stay in place, but the slip style will be unforgiving. Also, boxy figures that do not have natural curves may consider accenting the waistline with a separate bodice or sash to create the illusion of a defined waist.

Beware: Body hugging designs such as the column dress can constrict your movement, including the ability to sit and dance as comfortably as you would wish on your big day.; If you want a highly-constructed column dress, you may consider one that has pleats or gathering in the back that will allow you to move more freely.

Dress Styles: Ball Gown

The ball gown style is perfect for those brides envisioning a fairy tale wedding. This silhouette pairs a fitted bodice with a full skirt that can either be one piece or separates. The ball gown is most appropriate for large, traditional weddings where the dress will be consistent with the formality of the event.

Options: Much like the A-line dress, the ball gown can support many different necklines and sleeve lengths. Various combinations of these elements create many different looks for many different occasions. If you are having a very formal or traditional wedding where you are expected to be covered, choosing a ball gown with a portrait neck and long sleeves will keep you covered but also show your femininity. You can achieve a dramatic effect by choosing a strapless ball gown and pairing it with opera length gloves. If you want a simple yet elegant look, you can go with a sleeveless, scooped neck bodice that flows all the way to the ground.

Trains are perfect with the ball gown since the substantial structure of the skirt can balance the weight of a train. Whether you want the long theatrical presence of the cathedral length train or the subdued look of the brush length train, the ball gown can accommodate this traditional feature.

The ball gown can showcase a number of different fabric choices that highlight different aspects of the dress. The use of satin or a chiffon overlay creates a very elegant and traditional silhouette. Intricate beading or lace work on the bodice, paired with a simple satin skirt will draw attention to the upper body. Light and fluffy layers on the skirt will help to create a floating effect. The volume of the ball gown can be achieved in a number of ways.; The skirt may require a petticoat or crinoline to support its structure. Layering fabric, such as organza, taffeta, or tulle, can also create this same effect.

Things to Consider: While this style can accommodate most body types, the ball gown is ideal for slender or pear-shaped figures as the full skirt helps to accentuate the waist and hide the lower body. If you have a large bust, this style will help to create the hourglass look since it emphasizes the waistline due to the fitted bodice and natural or dropped waist.

Beware: The volume of the ball gown can create false and unwanted illusions. Be careful if you are on the shorter side since you may not have the height to balance the size of the skirt. Also, instead of complimenting the figure of a full-breasted bride, the skirt could actually cause her to look larger. Keep these factors in mind when considering a ball gown, and remember that an A-line or princess cut dress can be more flattering while still providing the desired effect.

Dress Styles: Mermaid

The mermaid silhouette contours to the body from the chest to the knee, then flares out to the hem. This is a very sexy look that highlights the curves of a woman’s body. For this reason, you must be confident and comfortable in your skin to pull off this dramatic style.

Options: The mermaid style can support just about all necklines and sleeve lengths to reveal or cover as much skin as you desire. Since this dress is captivating by design, a high neck and long sleeves will still create an alluring look without being too sexy. If you want to show off your skin, you can opt for a strapless neckline, or a halter with a plunging v-neck to accentuate your seductive side.

The look of the mermaid dress is influenced by the various skirt styles available. The skirt can flare out above the knee, at the knee, or below the knee for slightly different silhouettes. The shape of the skirt and the hem can also affect how the dress looks. A round skirt provides volume all the way around the lower part of the bride, whereas a trumpet flare creates volume that flows out behind the bride. There is also a flamenco flare that gathers the lower part of the dress in the front for a Spanish feel.

The mermaid dress can either be slinky or highly constructed, depending on the fabric it is made from. If you want a slip style dress that lightly hugs the curves of your body, light-weight silks and satin are the best choices. Stiff fabrics, however, will draw attention to the construction and dramatic shape of the dress. Either way, the mermaid style evokes images of sophistication and sex-appeal, whether it is worn at a casual beach wedding, or a formal evening affair.

Things to Consider: The mermaid cut is not for everyone. This daring design is best worn by slender figures, both short and tall. Since the mermaid dress is made to hug the body and show every curve, it is not well suited for those brides with full figures. However, if you are on the voluptuous side and want to accentuate your curves, this is the perfect dress for you. The most important thing to keep in mind when considering a Mermaid style dress is whether or not you will feel comfortable wearing it on your big day. You may have a flawless figure perfect for this type of dress, but if you do not feel confident in it, it is not worth choosing.

Beware: Clingy slip dress such as the mermaid often reveal embarrassing underwear lines. These lines not only reveal what you are wearing under the dress, but also take away from the elegance of your overall look. It is important to keep this in mind when considering a tight fitting or body hugging dress since it may restrict what items you are actually able to wear underneath the dress.

Dos and Don’ts About Satin Dress

Dress Fabrics
Eddie Irvine asked:

Satin is in fame since the era of flappers till hippies arrived. Fashion has taken a great toll in the last centuries, many fads have come and go but the charm of satin fabric never declined. Satin is always in the tongue of people whenever choice comes about fabric. It is still very high in the vogue.

Take any occasion; first choice in material regarding a dress is of satin. Whether it’s wedding, evening party, prom, ball, dinner party, pageant etc. craze for satin dress is same everywhere. It is a staple dress for many occasions. Main advantage of satin fabric is its durability. Satin, because of its structure and fiber content, is one of the most luxurious and lustrous fabrics manufactured.

Like choices in dresses, there are choices in satin also. There are four types of satin: Crepe back Satin, Antique satin, Duchesse Satin and Slipper satin. Satin also gives a choice in leeway of colors.

Dress made of such a high quality fabric should be taken great care off. It’s not a one-time show. You need to have cognition of cleaning tips. Here are some dos and don’ts touching on satin dress fabric.

Dos

* Wash your satin dress with cold water along with a gentle detergent.

* Hand wash is the best wash can be given to it. It retains its smoothness.

* Keep satin in a bucket containing a detergent solution for almost five minutes, so that solution can absorb the dust. After this gently squeeze the dress to let froth come out. Then rinse off thoroughly with cold water.

* Do not rub hardly the satin material as it affects its smoothness as well as loosened the fabric.

* After washing do not dry it in dryer. Instead place satin dress in a towel flatly and roll the towel, Swiss roll style, and apply pressure to force out water. Then unroll the towel and take out your dress and put it on another clean and dry towel for air-drying. Keep satin fabric away from sun or excess heat. This is the right procedure of drying satin.

* Like cotton, satin does not need to be ironed heavily. It is a light and smooth material thus cool ironing is perfect for it.

Don’ts

* Store satin in a cool dry place. Excess heat or sun is not good for placing it. Airtight container is also a good choice.

Things to Consider When Designing Your Prom Dress

Dress Fabrics
Bella H asked:

Not including graduation, the senior prom may be the single most memorable event in a teenager high school career. For young women, this is doubly true. She’s spent all year, if not longer planning for this one big day. From the shoes on her feet to the accessories in her hair, every little detail must be extensively planned and thought out.

Choosing the perfect prom dress takes careful thought, time and patience. Many high school girls are bypassing department stores, saying no to bridal shops, and instead opt to design their own prom dress! Designing your own prom dress to have it custom made is an exciting experience, but there are a few things that you need to be sure to do during the design process.

Things to consider when designing your prom dress:

What exactly do I want?: The decision to design your own prom dress is usually made because you want to stand out from the crowd and your custom made dress is a unique reflection of your style. If you aren’t a fashion designer by trade, coming up with an idea is often times the hardest part. Grab some a stack of magazines and check out what Hollywood stars are wearing on the red carpet. Cut the images out and create a scrapbook of design ideas. After doing this, take a trip the local department store and bridal shops. While the whole purpose of designing your own prom dress is to avoid looking like you purchased it off the rack, it’s still a good idea to check out the competition, see what fabrics are in, and get ideas.

What style of dress will look best on me?: This is an important question to answer during the dress designing process. Even if you were not designing your own prom gown, you still want to make sure the cut, length, and shape of the dress is flattering to your body. If you are top heavy, you probably do not want to design a prom dress that is very low cut. Besides the fact that it isn’t very classy, trying to adjust your dress all evening will make you very uncomfortable. If you are on the short side, a long floor length prom gown may or may not be the best option for you. A floor length gown may cause you to look even more short, so look to design a dress that will elongate your body. If you are plus size, designing your own prom gown may be the best option for you. But once again, make sure the style is fitting to your body type.

Where can I find someone to sew my custom designed prom dress?: So you’ve spent the weekend coming up with ideas, you now need the person who will actually sew the dress! It’s really best to leave the job of actually making the prom gown to a professional. If you are lucky, you may have a seamstress in your family who can do this for you – if not, you need to find someone. You can ask your friends or visit local alteration shops for references. After you’ve found your seamstress, you can go about the process of selecting the perfect print and fabric for your prom gown.

Which fabric should I select for my prom gown:? Now that you’ve found a seamstress it’s time to go fabric shopping. Consult with your seamstress first, it is important to ask if there are any limitations, restrictions are extra costs added to your total price based on what type of fabric you choose. For example, silk can be a very delicate and expensive fabric. Some seamstresses will charge a little more when a client is using silk because of this. When you’re at the fabric shop one thing you will need to remember is lighting and how a color or fabric will photograph. Bring your digital camera with you and take pictures of the various fabrics that you’re interested in. After you’ve done that, go back home and upload the digital picture to your computer. Do you still like the color? Does it look the same in photos? The fabric that appeared to be navy blue in the fabric store may actually look more like a Barney purple in your prom photos.

What about my prom date, what should he wear?: It’s so easy to forget about the guys during the prom dress designing process. But coordinating with your date is really important. Check with your seamstress to see if she’s able to design a vest, ascot, cummerbund or tie for your date. Many seamstresses will due this free of charge with the left over fabric from your gown.

This should be an exciting and stress free time in your life, so remember that while you’re going planning for your prom. Above everything else, having fun is the most important aspect of this special night.

Sharp Feminine Silhouettes and Drapes for formals

The first influence of this season is the highlighted bodice; designers this season are placing more emphasis on fitted shapes with striking color and embroidery or ornaments. Plunging neckline is crisply molded and matched to the extravagant inlays of the skirt with deep neckline and decorative mosaic designs are ruling the fashion modes. With the globalization of fashion trends, simplifying and highlighting the bodice in formalwear designs broadens the designer’s reach across cultural expectations.

The second influence is the bold feminine shape. Pinpointing the key looks, there is a distinct departure from the soft, pretty femininity of the past few seasons for autumn, as designers cut a cleaner silhouette and toyed with the concept of shape. The possibilities of texture and layering are cleverly explored and designers are using sheath, trumpet, princess, mermaid, and a-line styling to create curvy dresses, many with corseted or structured undergarments, reasserting the womanly look in this season’s formal line. Gone are the demure straight silhouettes and the tailored work wear looks of the previous century. The post-9/11 woman sees her public as a proud yet traditionally sensual individual.

The third influence of the season is the new emphasis on soft, feminine expression through silk and chiffon overlays, lace bordering, and beaded or rhinestone hems, lines, and straps. While the partygoer is simply elegant with brilliant structural accents, the bride dons a flowing gown overlayed with embroidered or appliquéd sheath. Soft satin silk is the fabric of choice, with form-enhancing embellishments to match the wearer’s personality.

Color in bold and beautiful

The palette for the season, though predominantly dark, is occasionally electrified with brilliant flashes of color. The traditional shades of black and grey are represented beautifully, supported by bursts of bolds and touches of shine. With a season draped in darkness, refreshing shots of sapphire blue and pops of marvelous magenta or coalesce colors in divine dresses perch up the entire season. Have fun and let bright colors and bold prints accessorize you this fall!

Color in Red

Punctuating the collections like a brilliant exclamation mark, red shows up intermittently, glinting through a mainly muted palette. Sophisticated and classic for the look that says you’re on top of the world.

Black and White

Classic black & white fashions are a hit again in prom 2006 as trend-savvy consumers desire the classic and elegant look. From clean lines to bold stripes and optical waves, monochrome combinations are the seductively simple route to smart dressing. Winter white is an important focus of the season, and it works great for the calendar events like winter or fall formals and cocktails.

Black is Back

Black is the number one staple for the season and will remain so well into 2006. Bright black looks showcase the blustery raven theme in tailored suits, asymmetric tops, and frothy evening gowns.

Gorgeous Grays

Grey is the designers’ shade of choice, and no wonder: restrained, chic, edgy - its subtleties allow for eclectic interpretation, whether sharp as steel in silk or soft in jersey knits. Pin tucks and pleats complement grey’s cool sophistication. Mix shades and textures for a more directional look. Choose hosiery carefully - sheer styles are a flattering option. Soften up with shades of heather gray this season. It is the only color that encompass coziness and comfort while remaining glamorous. Not to mention it looks great on everyone

Chocolate treat

The beginnings of fall bring decadent shades of our favorite indulgence to another level of luxury. Go ahead and indulge in fall’s color palette. The hue drapes beautifully in jersey, sequin or shimmering satin without adding a pound! From rich and dark to creamy and light, chocolate makes everyone feel and look just fabulous!

Eighties Vibes N Trends Romantic, off the shoulder neckline dress with empire waist in dramatic chiffon drape seem to revive the popular culture for that regal yet fresh and modern look embraced by generation X. Strapless is getting a lot of exposure these days, and the stylists use gems, beads, sheer, and train to add sparkle to the conservative evening. Recapturing the sexiness of the era, the Eighties silhouette is back. Try it in black or jolts of electric colors. Shimmers and Shines

The warm shine continues into the cooler months. No need for a full metallic blast, instead designers subtly weaved sparkle throughout garments to create a soft yet sexy sheen. For the girls who still want their bling, sequins combined with satin and sheer georgette get you ready for that fabulous evening.

Mini dress Boom

The mini dress or mini skirt for the spring will still reign come the winter, but don’t panic: Stores are ordering them longer. Revolutionary mini dress has resurfaced on the runway with its traditional tunic-like and bodice-less smocks in delicate lace and flowing fabrics. Details of woven necklines, perfectly pretty collars and oh-so-fun pockets will take you back to the mod Swinging London times! Thigh-grazing A-line flirty micro dresses will imbue a girlish charm for the season. There are endless ways—dark opaque hose; leggings; long, long boots—to make the mini work for snow days. Opaque tights and leggings will give these short skirts and tunics a cool stylish and contemporary feel as well.

Formal Opulence Rewind to the baroque luxury of imperial princess and Seventies glam rockers - gilding, rich fabrics and lavish embroidery with confident insouciance Opulence is the theme for the fall 2006, so drape in this opulence with dress down hair and make-up. Tracking down the allure of historical Helen of Troy and Hollywood Jean Harlow-esque with bias cutting and deep décolleté, designers make them the season’s next big-night numbers.

Prance in Prom wear, Home coming dresses and Eveningwear

Beaded and bangled, sparkling and luster fabrics factor big this prom 2006 season. For prom dress fabrics, it’s smooth satin, silky chiffon, slinky jersey, and lace. Jewel tones in emerald, ruby, sapphire, silver, and gold are important, as well as dress combinations in black and pretty shades of pink. Of course, the geek theme continues strong into this year, paying attention to the details - interesting necklines, pretty fabrics, sparkly touches - to make your prom dress to dazzle. A new trend is a high front slit accompanied by cascading ruffles. Sparkle and shine on the dance floor in shimmering fabrics like organza, glitter ice lace, and lustrous satin. Unique beads and ribbon detailing enhance the figure: rhinestone along the bodice, lace-up ribbon corsetry, criss-cross open backs, or swirls of lace with glitter topping.

New prom silhouettes this 2006 season are in empire waists, princess shapes and A-line separates and modified Mermaid design with a slim bust, waist, and hips that flares out below the knee, the vintage-inspired Empire design with a ruched bodice and flowing, and the lingerie-influenced Corset design with ribbon lacing along the front, side, or back. Rich reds, burgundies, and deep romantic purples and blues pretty coral pinks and turquoise capture the essence of the American Classic look. Winter white and classic black is still strong for early prom events, particularly in strapless dresses.

Fall on Cocktail Numbers

How to achieve fall’s most intoxicating evening look? Mix up equal parts satin, silk, and lace; add an elegant neckline, a defined waist, and a flared, flirty skirt. Serve in a sexy-but-sophisticated knee-length dress. Lace in all forms takes center stage, kept simple and modern in white, ivory, and blush.

Bridal and Ball gowns

Fresh from the runway, designers are showing off the softer side of their style. Big voluminous dresses and hair, delicate beading in unique patterns, gorgeous, floral-worthy embellishments, bodices with unique touches, and vintage-inspired details that are far from old-fashioned.

Whether you want a little or a lot of sparkle—designers worked it in this season from subtle glimmers to bold, beautiful bling. Beading gets worked into the lace on this tank gown with a trumpet skirt for an allover sparkly, shimmery effect. Beside this geometric, concentric, circular pearl design ornaments the bodice of sleek, silk crepe gowns. Strands of crystals form the delicate straps on the silk crepe dropped-waist gown. Flowers on wedding dresses are nothing new. Modern, streamlined back detailing recalls a patterned Art Deco look for these gowns. But this season, designers took a bold twist on the romantic front using color, subtle crystals, and crepe—accents worthy of a modern garden wedding. Embellishments of all kinds graced the bodices of this season’s gowns, from bold color and pretty pleats to refined ruffles. This season, designers took cues from eras gone by and worked retro accents into distinctly modern gowns—with show stopping results.

So now, accessorize yourself in exotic leathers, metal details and new shapes to give fresh interest to accessories when it comes to dressing up this season’s pared-down looks. Carry clutch bags, put on platforms, wedges with elbow-length gloves for that demure, and style to welcome the fashion swing this fall.
